Super.

Today I went to Oz Comic-Con, Australia's version of the Californian convention that always gets people talking, and I was not disappointed.

This was my second time at a convention (my first being Supanova last year), so this time I went in knowing exactly what to expect: a couple of stages with some shows going on, famous guests sure to get people excited, and crowds upon crowds of people - many of them dressed spectacularly in costume!

My main reason for wanting to go was the stalls. There are so many amazing things you can buy at these conventions, and they're not always as expensive as you might expect! At Supanova last year I managed to buy my mum a decent-sized replica of Sting, one of the swords from The Lord of the Rings. I was hoping for some similar finds today, but no such luck.

It was a week after I bought my ticket that I learned Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter) was going to be there, so I decided I would get my photo taken with her and get an autograph. And so I did:

My final reason for wanting to attend? I wanted to see everybody in their amazing costumes.

I was late to the Avengers game, failing to get into the movies until well after Iron Man 3 had been released, but as soon as I started watching them I fell absolutely in love with the Marvel realm. I've always loved the X-Men and the Fantastic Four (before even realising that they were Marvel characters), so it never fails to make me smile when I see somebody dressed as one of my favourite superheroes. Don't get me wrong - I love seeing all of the costumes, no matter what they are. I just have a soft spot for Marvel. And I was not disappointed today.

In anybody but myself, that is.

I wanted to dress up this year. Originally I was thinking of going as American McGee's Alice, because she's damn cool, but then I got sick and forgot about my idea. And while I was sick, I finally got to watch Avengers: Age of Ultron...

And I fell in love with Elizabeth Olsen's portrayal of the Scarlet Witch.

I know very little about the comic book version of the Scarlet Witch. I know she is Magneto's daughter; I know she's the twin sister of Quicksilver. Besides this, I basically know nothing - except that I hate her outfit, and her powers always sounded boring to me.

But then the movie came out, and I found myself drawn to young Wanda. She's a twin, which I will always love. She has a simple, easy-to-replicate look, which was my plan (until I couldn't find that jacket in time!). But I think my favourite thing about the movie version of her is that...she's basically who I would want to be, if I had superpowers.

Y'know, when people ask you, "If you could have one superpower, what would it be?" She is the answer to my question. She always has been. Telekinesis has been one of my favourite superpowers ever since I learned of its existence, and I was thrilled when they had her doing things like creating a force-field with that power. Using it like how I imagined I would.

So I like her, and I want to be her, and I'm bummed that I couldn't pull her outfit together quickly enough.

Next time, right?

But all of these superheroes being thrown in my face - from falling in love with the Scarlet Witch to seeing all of those costumes today - has reminded me just how much I wish I would write a superhero story. It has always been on my list of things to write, but how do you do it without looking like you're completely stealing from the DC and Marvel universes?

Is it even possible?

But there's something that I want to do in the near future. Maybe it will be my next writing project.

I seriously wish I could draw, too.

So - who's your favourite superhero? And if you could have any superpower, what would it be? ;)

  1. My favorite superhero hands down is Iron Man. He's sarcastic, a dick, has a lot of money, drinks a lot, and hangs out as a Guardian of the Galaxy after he learns how to build the space suit. And he kills Captain America and gives us Bucky Barns as the new big CA so I'm pretty content with his existing. *cough*

Uhh, I'm jealous. You got to meet Looney Luna, and I about screamed when I saw your photo of facebook.

And next time for sure! I've never been to a convention, so dressing up would scare the craps out of me. I need to go to a horror one so I can meet Norman Reedus and get my drawing of him signed. and I need to go to a youtube one so I can meet Markiplier, my future husband, and propose.

    xD I miss you.

    1. Spoiler alert! XD Seriously though, I just learned two new things about Iron Man - firstly, that he builds a space suit and hangs out as a Guardian; secondly, that he's the one who kills Steve Rogers! D= I knew Bucky was going to replace him, but I didn't know who did the murdering!

Is now a bad time to mention that before Scarlet Witch, Captain America was my favourite Avenger? =P But I do love me some Bucky!

Yesssssss, I got to meet her. ^_^ She's a super nice person. It's my first time ever meeting somebody related to the Harry Potter franchise, so I'm pretty happy with that. First time getting an autograph from anybody in person, too. I mean, I've met Brandon Saller and M. Shadows, but there were no time for autographs or photos there! D=

Ahem. Yo should definitely go to a convention! I love them as much as concerts. ^_^ I've never dressed up, and I'd probably chicken out at the last minute, but God it looks fun! And that would be awesome! XD

      I miss you, too. =(
